New sensation traditional opera Adamantina is adapted from the classic long verse poem, “Miao-Yu’s Meditation,” published in 1985 by major Taiwanese poet, Yang Mu (1940-2020). The story presents a rarely-heard passage from “The Twelve Beauties of Jingling” in the classic novel, A Dream of Red Mansions. The play elaborates on the possible feelings and actions of Miao-Yu, a Buddhist nun. Miao-Yu’s realization cannot be discussed; and her actions are triggered by her inner feelings. Listen to Miao-Yu’s singing: “The tiger loses its glory and envies the love of mandarin ducks. The woods are noisy, the cicadae are loud, and all but sorrowful sounds. Water flows and flows away, the red plum blossoms fade, so these thoughts should be continued no more.” This work brings together the genius work of Charles Liu, Liu Hsin-Jan, and Blaire Ko, and is their latest monodrama collaboration after their previous production of 2016, the jazz/traditional opera adaptation of Lady Macbeth.
