Faceted: Debates on Contemporary Art in Tainan《極度維面:臺南當代藝術之思辨》

Flowing Room No. 4 is part of the Jane series, a work that constructs a spatial scenario where viewers can observe and perceive the existence of “Jane” through portraits and diaries bearing her name. “Jane” is the English name given to the artist by her childhood English teacher. However, searching for “Jane” online reveals it as a digital persona shared by many. Through digital encoding, the individual’s real existence is reassembled as signals, losing its uniqueness in the flow of data, decoded and re-encoded into 0s and 1s. In this process, the identity is recombined with others, reappearing in a new form, becoming an ever-present yet absent “other.”

Since 2018, the artist has programmed a daily search to download photos tagged with “Jane” from the online album Flickr, using facial recognition software and an image auto-generation system to produce daily digital portraits of “Jane.” Flowing Room No. 4 includes 2,991 digital portraits of Jane from 2018 to 2023 covering the walls and floor; a digital frame displaying some of the #Jane photos downloaded from Flickr; Everlasting Flowers, in which portraits form petal-like elements that spiral and grow continuously; 24 volumes of Jane’s Diary 2020-2021, text auto-generated from tweets containing the name Jane, and four digital portraits of Jane that resemble both faces and flowers.

《流動的房間 No4》是《Jane》系列作品之一,透過以「Jane」為名的肖像與日誌,建構出觀者觀看、參與感知「Jane」存在的空間情境。「Jane」 是藝術家小時候英文老師給的英文名字,網路上搜尋「Jane」,卻是一種與眾人共享的網路分身,透過數位編碼,個人的真實存在以訊號重組,在訊號流動之中,失去了存在的唯一性,被解碼與重新編碼成為0與1,在與眾生重組的過程中換成另一個不同面貌重新存在,成為在場又不在場的他者。自2018年開始,藝術家每日以程式搜尋下載網路相簿Flickr中,標籤 「Jane」的相關照片,並以臉部辨識程式與影像自動生成系統,產製每日「Jane」的數位肖像。《流動的房間 No4》內容包括:牆面與地面鋪蓋2018-2023年共計2991張Jane的數位肖像;以數位相框展示Flickr下載的部分照片〈#Jane〉;以肖像為花瓣內容並形成螺旋狀不斷旋卷生長的〈永生花〉;24冊以程式抓取Twitter帳號涵蓋 Jane的推文,自動產製的文本內容〈珍的日記2020-2021〉,以及四幅看似肖像又似花的Jane的數位肖像。
