Chimeras sing a song (v2), Mobile Interactive Installation
The word "chimera" has two meanings. In Greek mythology, it referred to a hideous fire-breathing monster with the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and a serpent's tail. Today, however, it is also used in the field of genetics, where it refers to an organism made up of cells from two different species.Using "chimera" in the naming of this artwork is intended as a metaphor. It implies that human beings, as a species, have become chimeras composed of organic and inorganic (digital) cells. These humans use digital devices and transmit digital signals to create their own means of survival. In today's world, digital tools have become an extension of the human body. Human memory and digital memory now mix and interact in both real and virtual space to form a hybrid entity capable of evolving and reproducing.
The Interactive Process: The display consists of a handheld device (an iPod Touch) as an in-built chimera Petri dish. The device is connected to a Matrix, which is adjoined to a large screen. Visitors are invited to hold the device and walk around the exhibition area. When the device loses its connection with the Matrix , it begins to sing, and the chimera within the device – displayed in vivid color on a small monitor on the device's upper panel – begins to grow. When reconnected to the mother-board, the chimera is projected onto the large overhead screen. It reenters the world of the Matrix , clinging to it, growing, and eventually, merging with it to form a single, colorful entity.
