Introduction
Responding to Taiwan’s image as a global technology island, ART TAIPEI 2025 introduces the “FOCUS | Film Sector”, dedicated to video and digital moving-image practices. The section explores technology as an artistic medium while presenting artists’ critical observations of social environments and cultural phenomena. Curated by Yu-Chuan Tseng, the program centers on the concept “Touch /True,” reflecting on how bodies are seen, regulated, and amplified across both physical and digital spaces. Through video works, participating artists engage with, challenge, and reshape dominant social imaginaries, revealing obscured power structures and enabling gender and existence to remain fluid and visible. Featured artists include Sin Wai Kin, Jen Liu, and Liao Chi-Yu, whose video and narrative moving-image works address gender, labor, the body, and social structures, responding to the multiple realities of human life in the digital age.
S03 Jen Liu
Jen Liu, a New York-based visual artist, works across video, installation, painting, and biomaterials to examine labor, gender, national identity, and global industrial supply chains. She has received support from Creative Capital and the Guggenheim Foundation. Her work has been presented at MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Royal Academy in London, Kunsthalle Wien, the Shanghai Biennale, the Singapore Biennale, and the 2023 Taipei Biennial.
S07 Sin Wai Kin
Sin Wai Kin (b. 1992) is a multimedia artist who uses performance and video to explore the possibilities of drag and to challenge binary notions of gender and identity. Their work combines fictional narrative, cultural symbolism, and theatrical performance, using shifts between multiple characters to investigate gender fluidity and reconstruction. Drawing from cinematic and staged imagery, they critique commercial spectacle and patriarchal structures, and in 2022 became the first non-binary artist nominated for the Turner Prize.
S08 Liao Chi-Yu
Liao Chi-Yu primarily works with video, focusing on embodied experience, memory, and emotion. Her works interweave sweet visual aesthetics with violence, conflict, and vulnerability found in everyday life, using role-play and open narrative to depict shared moments within interpersonal relationships. She received the UNITEXT Jury Special Mention at the Kaunas Biennial in Lithuania and has exhibited at events including the Bonn Video Art Festival. In 2021, she presented the solo exhibition “Mind Wandering” at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum.
Jen Liu
Sin Wai Kin
Liao Chi-Yu
Curatorial Statement
Touch refers to sensory contact, bodily perception, and social impact; in today’s digital context, it also signifies the process by which information is “reached” and circulated. Here, Touch carries the sense of approaching the real, emphasizing the effort, tension, and affect involved in moving closer, drawing near, and striving toward it. True, in contrast, points to those realities concealed by social norms and algorithms, yet always present. Through their works, artists continually touch, strike, trigger, and even transgress social imaginaries, exposing and challenging what has been hidden, while rewriting the meanings of gender and reconfiguring modes of existence.
In lived reality, the body is constantly watched, disciplined, and expected; in digital environments, these conditions are amplified and intensified by algorithmic logic. Yet art transforms the body from a passive vessel of meaning into a site of response, resistance, and the becoming of subjectivity. When the body exceeds social expectations, manifesting alternative actions and forms, it is often seen as transgressing established orders. It is precisely through such performative strategies that artists stage provocations at the threshold, compelling audiences to confront truths and prejudices, and in the resulting tension to open fractures through which new perceptions and ways of thinking may emerge.
Touch True is thus a mode of inquiry: in an era where the real and the digital are deeply entangled, how might creators simultaneously compel and invite audiences to rethink and re-sense strategies of existence? Here, gender is not a fixed label but a fluid state—flashing forth through fissures, and at thresholds opening toward new realities.
